The Foreign Language Placement Exams
Studying a language other than English
is a
General Education requirement at UIUC. It is strongly recommended that you
take a foreign language placement exam even though you may think you have fulfilled your Gen Ed requirement!
A good score on the placement test can be a predictor that you should also take the
proficiency test, a separate paper-and-pencil exam given at the beginning of each
semester. If your performance on the placement exam places you at the fourth level or beyond, your placement
recommendation will identify an appropriate course for you to enroll in and will also suggest that you contact
the department regarding proficiency credit opportunities.
Online foreign language placement
tests are available in French, German, Latin, and Spanish. If you need a placement test in a language other
than these, contact the department that teaches that
language and arrange a date and time with them. If you are an international student for whom English is your
foreign language, click
here.
Any undergraduate who takes a UIUC language course cannot later
take the placement exam in that same language.
If you are a freshman, please select your college from the list

If you are a transfer student, you might not need to take a foreign
language placement exam. Click

Questions about your college's requirements should be directed to your
college. Questions about the placement tests should be emailed to
