NEW FRESHMEN
Congratulations on being admitted to UIUC! You
are about to join students from all over Illinois and, indeed, from all 50 states
(and from over 100 other countries) in pursuing an undergraduate degree at one of
the top 10 public universities in the nation. With students coming from so many
different educational backgrounds, certain colleges at UIUC require placement testing
in foreign language, math and science to help you start off with the right course at the right level.
Placement exams
allow you to demonstrate how much you have learned about a subject so that we can match you up with a
particular UIUC course in that subject. There is no placement exam for Rhetoric because you will be
placed into a Rhetoric course based on your highest ACT (or SAT) score in English. Placement into
Math courses will be based on the
ALEKS Math exam, which is required of all new freshmen and which
must be taken before you attend Summer Registration. Questions about ALEKS should be emailed to
advising@math.uiuc.edu.
Placement exams in Chemistry, French, German, Latin, and Spanish are offered online through this
website. Click on the links below for more information.
Even if you have taken Advanced Placement or International
Baccalaureate tests in these subjects, you still need to take the UIUC placement exams in
math, chemistry and foreign language if your college requires them. This is
because your AP or IB scores are not sent to UIUC until after Summer Registration is over.
Students who need extended time can also take the
online placement exams. To request authorization for extended time, contact the Testing Center at Disability Resources
and Educational Services (DRES) by calling 217-333-4604 (V/TTY) or emailing
testing@disability.uiuc.edu. Students with other disabilities who will require test accommodations should contact the
Testing Center at DRES to make arrangements.
