4-Day Intensive Web Design Workshop

Learn all you need to know to develop truly creative and compelling Web pages in this workshop taught by master instructor Peter Kimble of the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) at the University of Illinois.

This will be an intensive 4-day web design workshop, offered at various times in either a 4-day format (four full days, Monday through Thursday, or Tuesday through Friday), or in a 5-day format (with two afternoons off).  In four days of hands-on learning, you'll cover design, art, technical issues, and best practices for both beginning and advanced Web designers. Lunch is included on all full days; "continental breakfast" and mid-morning snacks are included every day.

You'll be working with and have the chance to explore the latest versions of the software covered in this workshop (Dreamweaver CS3, Microsoft Expression Web, and Photoshop CS3), but nearly everything we do will be equally applicable to those using prior versions of the software (including those using the now-discontinued FrontPage 2003, a precursor to Expression Web).

No prior Web experience (other than "surfing") is required.  Illinois teachers can receive 28 CPDUs for this workshop.

At this 4-Day Workshop, you will...

bullet

Learn about the Web and the fundamentals of creating a Web page using HTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)

bullet

Design sophisticated Web sites and Web pages using Dreamweaver, Microsoft Expression Web, and Photoshop.

bullet Learn how and why you can use Dreamweaver or Expression Web either separately or together (even on the same Web site), and learn to use many of the "power features" of each, including:
Dreamweaver layout view, templates, libraries, rollover behaviors, navigation bars, Flash buttons, and use of CSS styles for formatting and layer positioning

Expression Web layout tables, dynamic web templates, fully integrated creation of standard CSS-based pages, and site publishing, management, & reporting tools

bullet

Discover Microsoft's highly reviewed new Web design software: Expression Web. Use Expression Web to open & work with Web sites created by any other program.

bullet

Discover how to use CSS layers & tables to professionally design your Web page layout (and why layers are the preferred technique).

bullet

Address browser compatibility issues for the widest possible range of computers and screen resolutions.

bullet

Learn the principles of digital images as well as some basic enhancement and retouching techniques using Adobe Photoshop. Optimize images (JPEG, GIF, or PNG file formats) for the best balance between image quality and download speed.

bullet

Create Web forms, collect the results in new or existing database (or simple Web page), as well as create dynamic pages that automatically display information from (or are built from) a database.

bullet

Create dynamic image maps, animated GIFs, and sophisticated yet easy-to-create rollover effects. You'll even learn how (and why) to "slice" images into multiple segments.

bullet

Use Dreamweaver and/or Expression Web to bring together all your pages, whether created by hand-coded HTML, FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or any other Web design program. Even load entire pre-existing Web sites into Expression Web or Dreamweaver.

bullet

Receive a Web Design Certificate of Completion (suitable for framing!)

bullet

Earn 2.8 UIUC CEUs (Illinois teachers eligible for 28 CPDUs)

Also included in the workshop:

bullet

Four tutorial/reference workbooks

bullet

Authoritative and comprehensive handouts on topics not covered by the workbooks

bullet

Digital copies of examples and tutorial support files

bullet

Continental breakfast each morning. Lunches and mid-afternoon snacks on all full days.

Chicago Area:
We continue to offer the 4-Day Intensive Web Design Workshop about 5 times per year in Champaign-Urbana.  We hope to resume offering this workshop periodically in the Chicago area, if we are able to find suitable facilities.

The original expansion of our workshops into the Chicago area was a result of collaboration between the Center for Teaching Excellence and the UIUC Office of Continuing Education (OCE), which has now phased out its "Chicago Programs" division due to University budget constraints.

Past offerings of this workshop in the Chicago area have utilized the following locations:
Oak Brook (west) - Multi-University Center
Vernon Hills / Lincolnshire  (north) - College of Lake County, Lakeside Center
OCE no longer has facilities at the Illini Center in the Loop, where many past Web Design Workshops were held from 2001-2005.

Please contact us if you have any questions or suggestions.
