Model Outline for Outcomes Assessment Plan

Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS)

by Nan Volinsky, CLACS Academic Programs Coordinator

April 7, 1999

Process used in developing the plan:

Desired learning outcomes:

The satisfaction of CLACS mission for broad comprehension of Latin American and Caribbean studies with a primary focus in one of five perspectives, and a secondary focus on two other perspectives, such that students have an integrated understanding of the connections between social structure, culture, economics, politics, and history in Latin America.

Measurement instruments/techniques:

To discern how CLACS can better serve Latin American Studies majors and minors, we will use:

1) Interviews with each major

2) an ICES-informed survey

3) meetings with students

Process for using the results:

Results will inform the way CLACS advises students and the way we revise those aspects of the curriculum that are under our control. We will also diplomatically share results with course teachers.

Timetable for implementation:

In fall 1999: (1) conduct interviews, hold group meetings with students and the Center’s director; (2) get ICES-guided survey; (3) synthesize results; (4) revise undergraduate reference materials, e.g. instructions and requirements fact sheet, list of core courses; (5) improve distribution of reference materials to students through the web and e-mail; (6) maintain contact with students throughout semester.

Support needs:

In consultation with ICES and assessments staff.
