Welcome to the First Online Faculty and Student Assessment Conference of the Big Ten. We at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are honored to be hosting this important gathering.

The conversation to organize this event began about two years ago. Discussions among our own staff quickly led to those with others outside of our organization. Online learning certainly has found a permanent place in higher education. We seemed derelict in our duties to not consider the online environment for both faculty and student assessment in our higher education institutions. Because of the complexity of issues involved, we realized that further and more formalized discussion was necessary. And here we are.

Once again, welcome. We have great hopes for this conference as a way for those of us charged with providing psychometrically sound and logistically feasible methods of assessment using an online environment to learn and apply best practices of our sister institutions.
