Cutoff Scores, Placement Messages, and Credit Policies for 2008-2009

Proficiency credit is awarded on the basis of sufficiently high scores from 33 AP exams and is subject to change upon annual review. The policies below apply to all students entering UIUC in Summer 2008, Fall 2008, or Spring 2009.

Click here to see the changes that take effect in the 2008-2009 academic year. Please note that May 2009 will be the last year that the Computer Science AB, French Literature, Italian, and Latin Literature exams will be offered.

Questions should be directed to the Center for Teaching Excellence

  • The AP Chinese Exam is now accepted for proficiency credit.

  • The AP Japanese Exam is now accepted for proficiency credit.

The University of Illinois recognizes the value of the Advanced Placement (AP) Program and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. However, students should be aware that there are times when it is in the student’s best interest to take the UIUC course that corresponds to the AP or IB credit instead of accepting the test-based credit, so as to be better prepared for the rigors of the subsequent course in the sequence. Students are able to consult with their academic advisors during Summer Registration in order to determine what will be most appropriate for their individual plan of study.

New undergraduate students who have not already earned college-level credit in the subject are allowed to take a UIUC departmental proficiency exam in math, biology, chemistry, physics, French, German, or Spanish if they wish to try to proficiency out of an introductory course.
